Jared Hohlt

Slate named Jared Hohlt as its new editor-in-chief, effective April 1, five months after Julia Turner announced she was leaving the online magazine to join the Los Angeles Times.

Hohlt, who spent nearly two decades at New York magazine, stepped down from his role as editor of the print edition in January, a position he held since 2014, following the resignation of EIC Adam Moss and the promotion of David Haskell as his successor. While at New York, Hohlt also served as a features editor and culture editor. And before that, he started off his career as an editorial assistant for Slate.

“Jared is an extraordinarily talented editor,” said CEO Dan Check in a statement. “He has great ideas and he’s a strong manager and mentor—all of the qualities we want in an editorial leader. And, as a Slate alumnus, he deeply understands what Slate is all about.”
